Republic of Ireland Map produced for a customer
We had a request from on of our World of Maps customers from www.bjdesign.com for a PowerPoint map of Ireland for a customer who was setting up sales territories. We have included that map in our Great Britain map all along but didn't have it as a separate map. Not sure why that happen, but sometimes things get over looked. The customer asked about an individual one, so easy enough to make up. I took the Great Britain map and deleted the UK parts and then enlarged the Ireland side, fixed the text a little and there you are. Our maps are pretty flexible and easy to change. Once done I sent the map off to the UK for the customer. We received back and very comment and I am glad to help.

How Do I Download My Map?
We received a call today for a customer on our www.MapsForDesign.com site. He was buying a map PowerPoint Georgia County Map and couldn't quite figure out how to download the map and had a couple of questions on customizing it. The download link is just below the name of the map on the invoice form, but sometimes it doesn't seem to stand out and people give a call. We helped him and actually to get it there quickly I just emailed the map back to him. I received a nice email back from the customer and wanted to share it, I asked and he gave permission.

12 New How-to Videos for MapsforDesign Editable PowerPoint Maps
We have been quiet but quite busy lately here at the World of Maps. We have been redoing all of our How-To Videos for editing and customizing our editable PowerPoint Maps for MapsForDesign.com. Reworking each one to clean it up, update for PowerPoint 2007, and give everyone better instructions one how to do the different tasks. It has taken a while but we are done and they are now up on YouTube and will shortly be up on the MapsforDesign.com instruction page.
Some of the thing we did were simplified each video-"One Video/One Idea, aka Ed Dale," rewrote the YouTube and website text, new graphics, consistent look across all videos, beefed up the keyword research for better tags and helping customers find what they need, improved the titles and really worked enhancing the YouTube page. The goal was to have it all done for Labor day so that we can turn the videos over to our web master and he can connect them all to the site. Over the next couple weeks we will post each one here also.

Sharing World of Maps Clip Art with Your Team or Group

I was wondering, if we purchased the CD-ROM, would it be restricted to a single/private user or could it be used for business across the team/group?

We want you to be able to do your job and sharing with your coworkers is part of that. If you are going big, with lots of people and offices then we do have licenses for that, but for your regular team that you work with every day, feel free to share.

Can We Use the World of Maps Editable Clipart Maps in Books?

I am interested in using your maps in a book that I will be publishing. are there royalty fees to pay? do I need to indicate source of the maps on each page or at the end of the book?

Hi Gene, thank you for visiting our site and for your question. You are free to use the maps in your book, there are no additional royalties that you have to pay and you do not have to mention the source. If you want to somewhere that is cool but we don't require it at all.
The only restriction we have is if you are making a map clipart book, for that we have a license but other than that no problem at all. Would love to know the subject matter and when you get it done let me know and I will put a link to it on our blog if you want.

Copyright and Using Clip Art Maps in a Book
Customer Question
I work for a Korean publishing company and would like to use one of your maps in our book. Does ordering the CD-Rom map for $199.95 clear all the copyrights problem? Is there a need to credit the map in usage? Also, can we use your map again later in other publications as well, or are we supposed to contact you for each usage? It'll be very helpful if you can let us know about these questions. Thank you!

Setting Up A Clickable Map on a Web Site

I am building a web site that needs a USA map that once a state is clicked on counties show up, then I need to click on a county and have a page showing suppliers to show up. Do you have a map that will let me do this?

Thank you for your question. The basic answer is yes. We have all of the map elements needed to build a drill down map. Starting with the top level USA maps and then each state or county to follow up. One of the ways to build this on your site is to make an image map with hot zones. This is usually done using your web authoring program. You would highlight with a tool the outer edge of each state and then assign it a link. The link then goes to a new page with the new information. You can see all of our maps at www.bjdesign.com
The other way people do this is with Flash, which is an animation program from Adobe. Our illustrator maps will work with Flash. There are also some good companies out there you could look at that have developed packages for this, you might want to check them out. http://www.flashmaps.com, http://www.flashimap.com/ and http://www.maps4.com/index.html.
I am not sure which way you are going. We have nice collection of illustrator maps that can be easily customized if you are going in the image map method, and if you know Flash then I would look at the companies above.

Tips for Enlarging or Reducing a Group of Several States.
Customer Question: Are there any tips to help with enlarging or reducing a group of several states?
Our Answer: The basic key for enlarging or reducing several states is to use the grouping feature. Using your mouse pointer, hold down the shift key and select the states you want to enlarge or reduce. Holding down the shift key allows you to select several states at the same time, it also allows you to keep things proportional when you resize. Then select Group.
After grouping, you will see 8 handles around your object. With your pointer select one of the corner handles, hold down the mouse button and drag out or in, in a 45 degree direction to resize. After you have the size you want you can then ungroup. Text doesn't scale but it does move to the correct position. Before ungrouping resize the text using the general text size box located up in the top, then ungroup.

You do have the ability in PowerPoint to add more than one fill color to a state or country. This is usually done as a pattern and is located in the Fill Effects in the Fill pop up menu. You could have on color for each person and then two second colors, one for each exclusive and the other for nonexclusive. I would also set up a key on the side to help the viewer understand what is going on.

Adding Multiple Cities to a USA or World Map
Customer Question: I have a subscription to your editable World of Maps collection and I work with the US State and the World Country maps a lot. One of the challenges I have is adding cities in geographically correct locations – especially as it relates to a country. It is a tedious process, do you have any ideas or methods to help me do it quicker.
Answer: Great question, one of the ideas we had when building our maps was to keep them pretty simple, to make them basic outline maps that are easy to customize for the wide variety of uses people have. Our maps aren’t set up with any database abilities but PowerPoint or Adobe Illustrator are powerful programs and you can add whatever you need.
The basic way to do would be to find a regular State or Country map that already has the cities you are looking for on it. The best place to find this is Google Maps or Google Images. Google Images is one of the navigation button on the main Google screen, you can search on the map in question. Hundreds will come up. I look for a map that is 50K or more in size and save it to my computer.
This map is then brought into PowerPoint or Illustrator using the Insert or Place commands and is sized and turned to approximately fit the outline of your existing state. You are basically use the image from Google as a template to locate your cities. You can use the shapes or drawing tools to draw small city dots and you can place them over the cities on the map graphic. Add city names, when finished delete the state or country graphic. Once you get the hang of it the process moves pretty quickly.

Clip Art Maps are Easy to Download
We had a question today on how to download the clip art maps from our subscription site, www.bjdesign.com. We get the question on and off, but everyone does it differently.
It is pretty easy, after you have filled out the order form with the credit card and stuff you will be taken to the main download page. All of the maps are located there. With bjdesign.com you can come back to that page as much as you want, and download what ever you need over the course of a year. The maps you download are yours to keep forever. To download you click and hold on the word DOWNLOAD that is in-front of each map name, and then save it to your hard drive. The maps open from your hard drive in either PowerPoint or Illustrator or maybe a photo editing program, depending on what you downloaded. There are also instruction on ever page. The most popular maps are located on the main download page and the rest are located from from the navigation on the left.

How large can your maps be printed without loosing clarity of the image?

Hi Tracy, thank you for visiting our site and for our question. If you are using our Adobe Illustrator maps then you can blow them up as large as you want. Illustrator files are vector files. If you are looking for nooks and crannies then they will get less but the quality of the line will remain sharp and clear.
If you are using our PowerPoint maps they are also vector and can be blown up. We have customers that enlarge them to make larger maps for presentations.
Our JPG maps are bit mapped and do loose resolution at they enlarge.
As always the quality does depend on the printer. We also have lots of samples that you can download and test.

Question on Using Maps on a Web Site
Question on inserting a part of a map into a web page?
Do you know how I can insert one part of a map into a web page. Each state has 3 parts, full map with names, map, and just names. I only want one page in my web. Any ideas? I am very new to power point.

Hi Tammy, Each of our PowerPoint Maps come with a least three slides, Text and Land, just Land and just the Text, this gives you a lot of options. What I would do is to customize which ever map works best for your project. Then delete the other slides. You can do this under the EDIT pull down menu, select DELETE on the slide you want to delete, and then save the file as a JPG file-this is one of the options available to you in the SAVE AS command under the FILE menu. You will now have a jpg file that can go into your web page or into Photoshop to be saved as a GIF file for your site. You just want to watch the size of the file, but this is how you can get a pretty decent map out of PowerPoint. You can also give me a call and I can try walking you through the process.

Question on Coloring a Country?
A recent question on coloring a country:
Okay, dumb question here. I have a county map and I changed some counties to no fill (white) and I need to change them to another color, it won’t let me highlight county now. Help!

You should be able to select them by clicking on the border of the country with your pointer. Then you can fill using the paint bucket fill in the pop up menu in drawing bar along the bottom. You might also have to send the county that is next to it to the back because it is actually sitting behind that one. The arrange function for SENDING TO BACK is in the DRAW popup menu all the way to the left on the drawing bar. You should now be able to click on the line of the county that you want and give it some color.
